Fr. Paul Coyle has been curate of
Maynooth since July of 2003. “The Scottish
Priest” was born in Glasgow, and educated at St.
Roch’s Primary & Secondary Schools, Glasgow.
After leaving High School, he worked for 2 years
with the Scottish Catholic Observer (the
Scottish equivalent of the Irish Catholic).
Whilst with the SCO, he studied Business
Administration in the College of Commerce,
Glasgow.
In 1996, he left Scotland for Dublin, to begin
studies for the priesthood with the Priests of
the Sacred Heart of Jesus (SCJ), in Philosophy
and Theology at the Milltown Institute,
Ranelagh.
During these years, he worked pastorally in the
Capuchin Day Center for the Homeless, Church
St.; with his dear friends, the Poor Sisters of
Nazareth, Malahide Road; Cherry Orchard
Hospital; the CCD Classes for Rathgar Parish
School; Wheatfield Prison. Each of these
placements were for 1 year.
In 2000, he was accepted as a candidate for
Priesthood with the Archdiocese of Dublin. His
first appointment (as Pastoral Assistant) was to
the Parish of St. Therese, Mount Merrion, County
Dublin, assisting Frs. Frank Herron, Brian
Lawless, and the newly appointed PP, Fr. Pat
McManus.
For 2 years, he worked in Mount Merrion, before
being Ordained to the Diaconate in St. Patrick’s
College, Maynooth, by Bishop Jim Moriarty, on
April 1st 2002.
Following Diaconate Ordination, in November of
2002, he was moved from Mt. Merrion to work with
Fr. John Deasy in the Parish of St. Agnes’,
Crumlin.
In January of 2003, he was given a date for
Ordination – May 1st 2003. Fr. Paul was ordained
a priest by His Eminence: Cardinal Desmond
Connell, in his home parish of St. Roch’s,
Glasgow. Cardinal Connell travelled to Glasgow
and was assisted in the ceremony by the
Archbishop of Glasgow, Archbishop Mario Conti,
and many priests from Glasgow, Dublin and
further a field.
July 12th 2003, opened a new episode in Fr.
Paul’s life when he was transferred from
Crumlin, to what he thought was the ‘country’
parish of Maynooth. Boy was he in for a shock,
in a most pleasant way!!!
